Ethical Reflection on Ready Player One
I believe that Ready Player One shows us a version of what
can become of our own world, with the current speed at which things like virtual
reality, augmented reality and the computer industry as a whole are advancing
and growing, it is believable that a system of the scale of the OASIS could
someday be achieved. Even with the currently available technology, people use
games and social media to escape the problems they might be having in real life,
and we are already seeing the problems that having an outlet of that kind can
have in people from every age. From kids being less interested in physical
activity, teens looking for ways to become internet famous, and older people preferring
interactions with strangers on the internet rather than face to face
conversations with people they already know, we can see that something like the
OASIS could be used in the exact same way as depicted in the book, or even
worst. But just like our current technology is not all bad, the OASIS was not
all bad, as with everything, moderation is key in the usage of our own
pleasures, and many good things also come from the usage of technology in the
right way. Possibilities for something like the OASIS in our world, can be the creation
of new jobs, the stopping of current wars replaced with wars in the OASIS, a more
interconnected sharing of knowledge and many more things. As with everything,
it is us who decide to give it a good or a bad use to the technology that we develop,
all we can do is hope that our OASIS is not created by some madman planning
revenge on the society that we live in and if it is, that we can find a way to
stop him.
